Description
Cyanotype on vintage map. 60 x 49 cm
This work was exhibited for the first time as part of the exhibition ‘Objetos de Memória‘ (CABB, Fundacao Bissaya Barreto, Coimbra, Portugal) in 2024.
A vintage map of Yorkshire (UK) was cut in multiple directions to form interlocking ‘arches’ (though these were arches with straight edges!) which were raised to form a 3D structure resembling a sundial. This was exposed, creating shadows of its own form and areas of white which were not facing the sun.
This work introduces the element of time into images of space, yet remains within the philosophical ideas about memory of place, hidden histories and changing cultural identity. These themes are reflected in works such as M John Harrison’s novel ‘The Sunken Land Begins To Rise Again’.
